BORN: 1921

DIED: 2006 or 2007

Leroy Ebert is a relatively unknown artist who studied at the Layton School of Art after his service in World War II.

He attended art school on the GI bill, and graduated from Layton in 1949.

Ebert's work is strong and well executed, although he was not particular successful as an artist. He worked odd jobs, and spent most of his life living in a small, downtown apartment.

His scrapbooks, evidence a dynamic, creative life, filled with Milwaukee artists and musicians in the 1940s and `50s. Ebert's works - mostly figurative and cityscape - are courageous and experimental, and reflect Milwaukee's character and culture.
